My initial thoughts on #Mastodon is that instances are a great idea and that open source / distributed ownership is the way forward (imagine if a platform like Uber was owned by the drivers or drivers & customers)
That said, I worry about what happens when a server disappears or I want to leave an instance - will I really have to start all over again on another instance??
I'm not a dev but surely it needs the equivalent of a DNS name server to point at my handle wherever I am?
