It's cool that everyone's sorting out (individually and collectively) the social dynamics of accounts, instances, etc.
Sometimes we cling to a metaphor too much ("identity is like an email address", "a local timeline is like a forum for an instance") but each of these works for some aspect but breaks at some other level.
In the end Mastodon is its own thing. Not even Twitter is a good metaphor for it.
